Until April 1915 the canal bank at this point was more than 6 kilometres behind the front line. After the gas attack on 22 April 1915, this line moved forward to Boezinge. During the Second Battle of Ieper the canal bank was defended by the 1st Canadian Artillery Brigade, which suffered heavy losses. By the end of the battle, the Germans had approached to within two kilometres of the canal.
From May 1915 to 31 July 1917, this new front line was more or less stable. It followed the course of the canal from the north until Boezinge, where it swung eastwards.
A series of shelters for troops and field hospitals were dug into the high canal bank between Boezinge and Ieper. This was now the northeastern sector of the Ieper Salient. In the second half of 1915 this sector was largely defended by the men of the 49th (West Riding) Division, from Yorkshire, who are now commemorated by a large monument. From October 1916 to September 1917, the 38th (Welsh) Division served here.
After 31 July 1917, the front was pushed eastwards again, so that things became quieter along the canal bank. Even so, the canal remained a psychological boundary for the troops: on this. side there was life and hope; on the other side there was misery and possible death. The front came close once more, during the German Spring Offensive of 1918.
