Henrik Ibsen moved into Arbins gate in 1895 and wrote his last two plays here, both of which had their world premieres abroad. "John Gabriel Borkman" passes judgment on those who put dreams, power and honor above love and living life. It had its world premiere in Helsinki on 10 January 1897 – simultaneously at the Swedish Theatre and the Finnish Theatre.(Submitted on December 5, 2024.)
Ibsen's last play "When the Dead Wake Up" is an epilogue to the artist's life and calling – and the neglected life that cannot be lived again. The play had its world premiere at the Hoftheater in Stuttgart on 26 January 1900. That same year Ibsen suffered his first stroke, and his health steadily deteriorated until he died on 23 May 1906.
