Inscription.
About 1852 a small group of Catholics settled in Guilford. The first Catholic services were celebrated in the Henry Whitfield House until 1860. Under the leadership of George Hill, a Catholic Chapel was established at 116 Whitfield Street. Mass was celebrated there until this structure was completed and dedicated on October 13, 1878 as Saint George Catholic Church. It was deconsecrated in 1963 after Saint George moved to the Guilford Green.
