Franz Liszt schenkte Wagner, wenn auch unfreiwillig, nicht allein seine Tochter Cosima, sondern lange Zeit auch seine tätige Zuneigung. Kein Musiker hat sich so intensiv und auf so vielen Gebieten für den Komponisten Richard Wagner eingesetzt wie Liszt. 1842 übernahm er das Kapellmeisteramt in Weimar, ab 1848 hat er es dann mit voller Energie im Hoftheater für die moderne Musik genutzt 1848 führte er dort den Tannhäuser auf 1849 - als Wagner als politisch Verfolgter im Exil lebte - hatte er den Mut Wagner aktiv zur Flucht in die Schweiz zu verhelfen und 1850 den Lohengrin uraufzufuhren. Damit nicht genug: Liszt hat sich auch als Schriftsteller für das Werk Wagners eingesetzt und plante, den ersten konzipierten Teil des Ring (Siegfried's Tod) an der Ilm auf die Bühne zu bringen. Die Beziehung verrdunkelte sich zwar, als Liszt nicht bereit war, Wagners Opernthesen zu folgen Auch kam es zum Zerwürfnis, als Wagner mit der Tochter Cosima eine intime Beziehung einging, doch rauften sich Liszt und sein Schwiegersohn wieder zusammen Von Liszts Werbearbeit für Wagner zeugen einige, bis in die letzten Jahre reichende bedeutende Klavierbearbeitungen, auch die Tatsache, dass er nach Wagners Tod das Amt eines „Präsidenten der Bayreuther Festspiele” versah und im Sommer 1886 noch todkrank in der Loge saß um seine Solidarität mit den Festspielen und Wagners Werk öffentlich zu zeigen.

Franz Liszt, albeit unintentionally, not only gifted Richard Wagner his daughter Cosima but also, for a long time, his active affection. No other musician devoted himself so intensively and in so many areas to the composer Richard Wagner as Liszt did. In 1842, he took on the role of Kapellmeister in Weimar, and from 1848 onwards, he used this position with full energy at the court theater to support modern music. In 1848, he premiered Tannhäuser there, and in 1849—while Wagner was living in exile as a politically persecuted man—Liszt had the courage to help Wagner escape to Switzerland. In 1850, he also conducted the premiere of Lohengrin. But that’s not all: Liszt also supported Wagner's works as a writer, planning to bring the first part of the Ring (Siegfried's Death) to the stage at Ilm. The relationship soured, however, when Liszt was not willing to follow Wagner’s operatic ideas. The break deepened when Wagner began an intimate relationship with Liszt’s daughter Cosima, but Liszt and his son-in-law eventually reconciled. Liszt's promotional work for Wagner is evidenced by several significant piano arrangements that lasted into his final years. Even after Wagner's death, Liszt served as "President of the Bayreuth Festival" and, in the summer of 1886, still gravely ill, sat in the box to publicly show his solidarity with the festival and Wagner’s work.
