Volunteers Mural. . , This glass mural was designed by local artist and muralist William Cochran in 1989 to commemorate the contribution of local firefighters and the former location of the Independent Hose Company in Frederick, MD. The 1,500 pound artwork depicts a team of circa 1920s firefighters leaving the station in response to a call., Firefighters of the contemporary Independent Hose Company, and Cochran's brother, posed for a photo used by the artist that was later sketched and then carved in glass at Sand Glass Studio, Atlanta, GA. Independent Hose Company - The Independent Hose Company, founded 1818, is the oldest firefighting company in continuous operation in the State of Maryland. It was located at 12 W Church Street in downtown Frederick from 1846 to 1978., The glass mural was installed in the former garage door of this building., . Memories Carved In Glass - The Independent Hose Company moved to a larger location and the building was sold. During the renovation, architect, Tim Crosby, suggested the creation of artwork that would commemorate its original use. The new building owners agreed and commissioned Cochran as artist., . Relocation - Relocation of the mural from Fredericksburg to Emmitsburg required the closure of W Church Street so that a crane and other special equipment could be positioned to remove the glass. After two years of planning and fundraising, the mural was dedicated Friday, October 4, 2019 during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend with over 150 firefighters and the public in attendance., [Bottom right reads] , Relocation made possible by Ausherman Foundation, Delaplaine Foundation, Frederick County Economic Development, Frederick County Office of Tourism, Trout's Seafood, VFIS, Town of Emmitsburg.
