Inscription.
This memorial was erected in July 1999 by Case Canada Corporation to commemorate 96 years of manufacturing in Hamilton.

In 1902, the Deering Harvesting Company acquired 115 acres of land in Hamilton's eastern harbour industrial area. Later that year, International Harvester Company was formed through a merger of several companies, including McCormick and Deering. The Canadian operations of International Harvester were established early in 1903, with headquarters and manufacturing in Hamilton.

Over the years, Hamilton Plant employees fabricated and assembled a wide variety of farm equipment, and during WWII, war materials.

Original works buildings included a foundry, a forge, a wood shop and assembly facility. In 1918, the Company acquired the Oliver Chilled Plow Company located immediately west of the International Harvester site. In 1925, the Hamilton Twine Mill was established to produce high quality sisal twine. In 1953, an Engineering Centre was opened at the corner of Burlington Street and Sherman Avenue. Product Development and Test Departments were both located at this site.

In 1958, Hamilton Tractor Works

and Heavy Duty Equipment Works were opened on site, with engineering, manufacturing and assembly of crawler tractors and heavy duty diesel trucks.

In 1985, The Agricultural Division was sold to the J.I. Case Company. In 1997, a time capsule was discovered behind one of two medallions flanking the main entrance to the 1911 Works Office. The medallions and the time capsule were relocated to a cairn erected in front of the new Plant Office. A tribute to International Harvester employees who served in the two World Wars was also mounted on the cairn.

In 1999, with the closing of the Hamilton Plant, the cairn was dismantled and rebuilt on this present, permanent site. The 1911 time capsule materials, and additions made in 1997, are sealed herein.

Erected 1999 by Case Canada Corpration.
