Built in 1340. Earliest mention in 1563 as residence Peter van den Hove, Lieutenant-Drossaard of Spanish-Valkenburg. Renovated late 19th century. 1624 owner Ernest de Groot, Lord of Oost en Strucht. Last noble resident Baroness von Schrader, born Alide de Villers de Pitι (died 1941). 1953 owned by the municipality of Valkenburg a.d. Geul. Restoration 1971.

2. Kasteel Oost Marker - wide view

After the Second World War, Oost Castle was seized as enemy property by the Dutch State. In 1950, the complex was purchased by the municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem. In the 1950s, the new residential area Oost was built on part of the former estate, bordering the built-up area of Valkenburg. From 1951 to 1971, the castle served as an agricultural school and from 1979 to 1981, a literary centre was housed there. In 1997, the Hensels family, who were also the owners, extensively restored the castle again. From 2010 to 2015, a Butler Academy was established there. In 2023, the municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem organised a public tender. Interested parties had to submit a bid and a plan, in which the castle had to remain as accessible as possible. The winning bid was made by the well-known bridal entrepreneur and TV personality Ramona Koonings. Her plans include a bridal shop, a wedding venue, a hotel and a restaurant.(Submitted on December 11, 2024.)
