3. John Haar, Jr. (1844-1921)
A native of Hannover, Germany, he emigrated to the United States at 21 and arrived in Wilmington three years later. He operated a grocery, a saloon and sold insurance before becoming New Hanover County Register of Deeds in 1891. He held the post until 1896, and again in 1906-1918.
