Garden Historical Features
The fence section along the back wall replicates the fence that surrounded the courthouse square in the 1840s when it was used for public grazing. Bricks that edge the garden were taken from the Miller- Polk Tavern that stood near "Bienvenue" and "Erin Hill", two old homes present in the Courthouse district in the 1830s. The garden entrances include bricks made in Powhatan at Clayville in 1907. Buckingham Slate used for the walkways is the same slate that is on the roof of the oldest building in the Courthouse area, the Clerk's office, built in 1796.

These plants are noted for their hardiness and ability to adapt to local climate and soils. As you enjoy the garden, please take note of plants included in beds 7 and 8, our native plant beds. We encourage use of these plants in the home garden setting, as natives survive without chemical pesticides and fertilizers and need little supplemental water. Our
