1. Browne House Marker

Inscription. Newbern Hobbs Browne built this Gothic cottage in 1870. It is one of the first residences built in Tuscaloosa following the conclusion of the Civil War. Browne served four terms in the Alabama Legislature (1853-1859; 1873), and as Tuscaloosa County Probate Judge from 1874 to 1891. The house was originally located on the corner of Greensboro Avenue and 9th Street before it was relocated adjacent to Capitol Park in 1978. The land and relocation were donated by Cathy and Pettus Randall. Since 1979, the Tuscaloosa County Heritage Commission has managed the house. Listed in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, July 31, 1975
