1. Original Buildings Of The Former Danville Lumber & Manufacturing Company Marker
The Danville Lumber and Manufacturing Company and its parent companies operated for over 100 years on this property utilizing 28 buildings located throughout the grounds. Of these buildings only two, the dispatch office and the kiln building, remain.
The dispatch office is a 18' x 18' one room 5-Course American Bond Brick building that dates to the early 1900's. Equipped with a desk, waiting chairs and a few cupboards, the building would have been the area where orders were brought in and sent out from in accordance with the company's internal paperwork system.
The kiln building also dates to the early 1900's. The 85' x 22.5 rusticated cinderblock building was built with a concrete floor and was designed as a wood-drying kiln. The function of the kiln was to provide an enclosure for lumber to be dried by the application of heat. Humidity was increased by the drying process and was exhausted via a venting system.
