1. "Bear" Howard's Chuck Box Marker
Inscription. Jesse Jefferson "Bear" Howard was one of the first settlers in Oak Creek in the 1880s, arriving there from California. Well known in the territory for hunting bears, Howard primarily sold the meat to merchants in Flagstaff and Williams. He hollowed out this log in 1883 to serve as a chuck box for storing his food. He kept it under a rock ledge, covered the top with a board and loaded rocks on top to keep animals away from his provisions. Howard carved his name and date on the right front of the log.
