memorial.
Memorials to individual war heroes were common across Chicago during the war and in the immediate aftermath, but through the years most were taken down, and only a handful remain in the city. According to government records, George Doney's home address was 3433 S. Western, which is across the street from this location and may explain the site’s origin for an individual war memorial.

Three separate placards are affixed to 7-foot-tall bollard that is embedded into a concrete star in the middle of Western Avenue's grassy median. A flagpole is nearby.

Regarding World War II Memorial. Details of Pfc. George Francis Doney's service beyond the date and location already listed on the sign could not be determined. The Battle of Peleliu was one of the fiercest faced by the U.S. Marines during World War II; in fighting over 73 days, about 2,000 American soldiers were killed. The battle began with an amphibious assault on September 15, 1944, which means that Pfc. Doney was killed within five days of action. He was 19 years old when he was killed, and he was buried at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. A brief obituary for Doney, printed about two months after his death, listed his survivors as his parents, Raymond and Mary, and a sister named Margaret. In addition to this memorial, Doney's name is included on

According to his draft registration card, Robert Howard "Bob" Williams was working at R.R. Donnelley, the printing company known for producing catalogs, when the war broke out, and was living Ύ of a mile east of here on the 3500 block of S. Paulina. Williams's 1999 obituary said that after the war he served as a policeman for the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Park District. He was also a member of Post 231 and VFW Post 5079.

Information about Joseph Spizzirri could not be confirmed with certainty, including where he lived or whether he survived or was killed in battle in Anzio.
