Apolo Ohno began his historic eight-time medal-winning Winter Games career in Salt Lake City. Ohno emerged from a final-lap pileup in the 1000-meter race to secure silver and won gold in the 1500-meter event after a South Korean skater was disqualified for obstructing Ohno's path.
Vonetta Flowers and Jill Bakken won gold in the inaugural women's Olympic bobsled event. Flowers made individual history as the first Black athlete to win a Winter Games gold medal.
The U.S. Men's Sled Hockey Team was dominant in the 2002 Paralympic Games-finishing the tournament with an undefeated 6-0 record. The U.S. capped off their unprecedented success with a thrilling 4-3 gold medal shootout win over defending 1998 Paralympic Champion Norway to capture the first-ever United States Paralympic gold medal in men's sled hockey.
Sarah Will capped her decorated Paralympic skiing career with a dominant performance at the 2002 Paralympic Games. Will swept four separate 2002 events super-G, slalom, giant slalom and downhill bringing her total to 12 gold medals and one silver medal from 1992 to 2002.
Sarah Hughes was the youngest member of the U.S. Figure Skating Team in 2002 at 16-years-old, and was considered an underdog to several other competitors. Hughes saved her best performance for the biggest moment of her career-skating with joy, ease and grace to capture gold in the individual women's event.
Snowboarding is a true American winter sport and Ross Powers, Danny Kass and JJ Thomas made history with home snow advantage for Team USA in 2002. They earned the top three spots in the men's halfpipe - the first U.S. podium sweep at an Olympic Winter Games since 1956.
