The Jewish monument in(Submitted on December 20, 2024.)Beek was erected in memory of the lost Jewish community and the lost synagogue. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Jewish community of Beek consisted of 26 members. Sixteen of them survived the years of occupation, mostly with the help of fellow villagers. After the war, the Jewish residents moved to another municipality, died naturally or converted to the Catholic faith. The Jewish community was merged with that of Maastricht in 1954 and the synagogue was sold to the municipality of Beek and converted into a residential home.Photographed by Andrew Ruppenstein, July 14, 20242. The monument consists of a strongly stylized granite column and a column with a transverse beam (top lintel) with a text in Dutch and Hebrew. The text, Psalm 118, verse 20, was also above the door of the synagogue in Beek
The lying column on the ground, with a millstone broken into four, symbolizes the lost Jewish community.
