1. Unionville Marker
Inscription. Founded in 1794 by William Berczy and his group of German settlers from Pennsylvania and New York, this village was officially named Unionville in 1849. Early activity centred around the mills, such as Stiver's, on the Rouge River to service the neighbouring farms of Eckardt, Eakin, Crosby, Braithwaite, Summerfeldt and other families.

The preservation of historic Main Street has been made possible by the determined vision and cooperative effort of the Unionville Village Festival Corporation, the Citizens and Council of the Town of Markham and the merchants of Main Street. Dedicated to the community spirit which enhances the heritage of the people of Unionville.

2. Unionville Marker
Unionville's name was derived from American-born Ira Allen White's Union Mills built in 1839, which in turn was named for the Act of Union 1840 of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. William von Moll Berczy brought the first settlers to Markham Township in 1794; they were originally from Germany but first moved to New York State. After arriving here, they acquired large tracts of land near current day Berczy Village at 16th Avenue and Kennedy Road (Submitted on December 21, 2024, by Tim Boyd of Hamilton, Ontario.)
