Regarding Mount Airy Friends Church. Excerpts from the Mount Airy Historic District Nomination Form:
This charming Gothic Revival style granite church was constructed in 1904 by contractor Lee Jones on the former site of a large, unidentified masonry warehouse. The church features wood-shingled gables with decorative exposed truss system, corner crenallated tower, and large stained glass tracery windows. The Quakers' settled in Surry County about 1769. They had established a church in Mount Airy by the end of the 19th century and had sponsored a school in the Surry County community of Westfield early in that century.
