Central Catholic High School was founded as an all-male secondary school. The first freshman class began attending in 1927. Although the school initially took students only from the central neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, the decline of regional equivalents eventually attracted students from a more comprehensive geographic and socioeconomic range. Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino heads a lengthy list of notable athletic alumni. Central Catholic High School was designated a Pittsburgh Historic Landmark in 1976.
