Birthplace of Ludwig Emil Grimm
Landwehrregiment in Frankreich.
The birthplace of Ludwig Emil Grimm (March 14, 1790), the "painter brother" of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, stood here. The Grimm family moved their center of life from Paradeplatz here in 1787 or 1788. In 1791 they moved to Steinau an der Straße. The building, like the entire Hanau city center, was destroyed in an Allied air raid on March 19, 1945 during the Second World War.
Jacob Grimm described the property in 1814 as follows: "I can still imagine the house quite well. It was painted bright red. We lived here (as renters) all alone, downstairs there was a living room with hunters on the wallpaper (we painted beards on them). The house and yard doors were painted yellow-brown. The yard was narrow, wood was sawn there and to the right was the laundry room, where the laundress gave you a drop of brandy on black bread to eat. When you came up the stairs, you went left into the living room, where the mother was. The father's room must have been either to the right or behind the living room. The nursery was at the back of the yard, I often
stood at the window and saw an apple tree whose branches protruded over the yard wall from the neighbor's garden."
We know from the Brothers Grimm's memories that they liked to play hide-and-seek and ball games on the first floor. In the living room, where the fire flickered in the winter, they reluctantly submitted to the procedure of their mother washing her children with lukewarm water and sweet-smelling wine. She often went to the window to curiously observe what was going on in the street in a mirror attached to it. From outside you could hear the hissing of hosiery looms; a glove maker lived opposite.
Ludwig Emil Grimm, also known as Louis, attended the Lyceum Fridericianum Kassel from 1804 to 1806. He then studied at the Hanau Drawing Academy, the Kassel Art Academy and from 1809 to 1814 at the Munich Art Academy. In 1814 he did voluntary military service as a lieutenant in the 3rd Landwehr Regiment in France. In 1816 he traveled to Italy with Georg Brentano.
From 1817 he lived in Kassel. Close contact with his brothers, the "Romantics" and Electress Auguste. 1832 teacher at the Kassel Art Academy, 1832 appointed professor. 1832 marriage to Marie Böttner and their daughter Friederike (Ideken), 1835 second marriage to Friederike Ernst. Ludwig Emil Grimm died of pneumonia on April 4, 1863 and is buried in Kassel.
We owe him many drawings and etchings, including portraits, caricatures, fairy tale illustrations and landscape paintings, which are among the most impressive of romantic art. The Brothers Grimm town of Hanau has been awarding the Ludwig Emil Grimm Prize in his honor since 2012.
