The Elizabeth Lake School District was formed July 6, 1874, by J. Hefner & fifteen other pioneers. The Lake Hughes School District was formed March 6 1899. The two districts formed a union through an election on October 10, 1950 to become the Hughes Elizabeth Lakes Union School District. It is the oldest school district in the Antelope Valley.
