After the Second World War, Freiburg was the capital of a distinct state of Baden, which was created in the French-occupied part of the former state of Baden.

The historical department store was the seat of the Baden State Parliament, which met here for the first time on May 20, 1947.

After a referendum on December 9, 1951, the State of Baden was united with the states of Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern on April 25, 1952 to form the federal state of Baden- Württemberg
