1. Carriage House Marker
Inscription.  Designed to accommodate horse-drawn vehicles, this structure was built on the property of Morgan M. Mayfield, a lumber merchant, at the corner of Lakeside Drive and Gillon Avenue in the new suburban community of Highland Park. Automobiles were becoming increasingly popular by 1910, but horses and carriages were still common sights on streets. Eventually, many carriage houses were converted to garages housing cars.

Highland Park was developed beginning in 1907 as a fine residential suburb, removed from the smoke and dust of the city. Because of its slightly higher elevation, it was advertised as being "ten degrees cooler" than Dallas.

Fun Fact
The carriage house and ticket office came from the same property. Look closely to see how similar they are.

Captions
(Photo #1) Before being moved, the building had to be emptied of years of accumulated treasures.
(Photo #2) The end of the ticket office is visible behind the carriage house.

Given in honor of Mary Keil for more than 20 years of loyal service to Dallas Heritage Village.
