(Born Rezso Engel, in Hungary 1873, died in Hackney 1928)
who lived in Hackney and founded in this building, the 1914 National Association of the Old Comtemptibles war veterans of the U.K. Their heroic stand in France saved Britain. He is buried at Abney Cemetery.

It is well-known that Captain John Patrick Danny was the instigator of the formation of The Old Contemptibles Association in 1925, but very little is known about the man. In order to rectify this I recently began to try and find out as much as I could about him, as part of my ongoing research into the Association, but little did I imagine that his story would prove to be so complex and enigmatic.(Submitted on January 10, 2025, by Jerry Klinger of Boynton Beach, Florida.)

3. The Grave of Captain Danny.
The Old Contemptibles Association was a massive veterans network which had 178 branches up and down the country, as well as 14 that were overseas. To be an old Contemptible was to have a shared association; they were more than just a plain old soldier. The British Expeditionary Force which served in Flanders within range of the enemy mobile artillery between 5 August and 22 November 1914 at the first battle of Ypres. Their stand against a force of ten times their number prevented the German advance against the Chanel Ports.
Unveiled on 15 July 1993 by H.M. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
6. The Old Contemptibles - Birmingham.
The Old Contemptibles "The Old Contemptibles" is named after the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) that was sent to France and Belgium in World War I. The Secretary of State for War Richard Haldane established the BEF in case the United Kingdom had(Submitted on January 10, 2025, by Jerry Klinger of Boynton Beach, Florida.)to deploy quickly a force to take part in an overseas war. The force got it's nickname "Old Contemptibles" from a supposed "Order of the Day" issued on 19 August 1914 when Kaiser Wilhelm said: "It is my Royal and Imperial Command that you concentrate your energies for the immediate present upon one single purpose, and that is that you address all your skill and all the valour of my soldiers to exterminate first the treacherous English {and} walk over 'General French's contemptible little army." Although the Kaiser had described the BEF as "contemptible little" it got reported as "Contemptible" the name stuck and the BEF proudly referred to themselves as the Old Contemptibles.

It does not matter. What he did with his life had little to do with being a Christian or a Jew.
