The University reached its climax during the Age of Enlightenment
With its status confirmed in 1681 When Strasbourg was incorporated into the kingdom of France, the university - still Protestant and partly German-speaking - fostered the spirit of the Enlightenment. It forged a reputation in the fields of law and political science thanks to historian Jean-Daniel Schoepflin (1694-1771) and his disciple Frédéric-Guillaume Kock (1737-1813), both buried at St Thomas Church. Its influence was embodied by a wide array of individuals, including the Oberlin brothers - philologist Jérémie-Jacques (1735-1806) and pastor and teacher Jean-Frédéric (1740-1826) - as well as naturalist Jean Hermann (1738-1800), physician Jean-Jacques Fried (1689-1779) and theologian Jean-Laurent Blessig (1747-1816). Goethe studied in Strasbourg between 1770 and 1771.
