Le 1er septembre 1939, le Ille Reich déclare la guerre à la France. Les Strasbourgeois reçoivent l'ordre de quitter la ville. Nombre d'entre eux réunissent toutes leurs affaires et fuient en charrette ou à bord de wagons à bestiaux. Beaucoup prennent la direction du Périgord.

Environ 120 000 Strasbourgeois sont évacués. Certains reviennent chez eux après l'armistice de 1940, mais beaucoup retrouvent leurs maisons endommagées ou occupées.

On September 1, 1939, the Third Reich declared war on France. The people of Strasbourg were ordered to leave the city. Many of them gathered all their belongings and fled by cart or cattle wagon. Many of them gathered all their belongings and fled by cart or cattle wagon. Many headed for Périgord.

About 120,000 people from Strasbourg were evacuated. Some returned home after the armistice of 1940, but many found their homes damaged or occupied.
