No. 5 Place du Chateau was built between 1857 and 1861 as part of a scheme for cleaning up the surrounding district and showcasing the cathedral. The neoclassical- style building was originally meant for offices, businesses and luxury apartments. Work on them was just about finished when the army came in and asked to take over the building for its medical school. It remained there from 1861 to 1870, before the school was transferred to Lyon and the building taken over by the French post office in 1871, joined shortly afterwards by other city council departments and the cabinet des Estampes et des Dessins (the prints and drawings collection) and now the 5e Lieu tourist information centre.
