Inscription. Before this building was constructed, this area was the location of Hunter's Blacksmith and Wagon Shop. Elkins Motor Company and Shapiro Produce Company were nearby, facing west. The brick building, known as the Yates Building, was built in 1937 and contained spaces for three businesses. The Black Cat Cafι, Sample Shoe Store, Model Beauty Shop, and Sam Wade's Produce Company were among the businesses that operated in the building. The Employment Security office was located here in the mid-fifties. Other businesses in the building were an upholstery business, a bakery, and Peeler's Electric Shop. The Hickman County Times, begun in 1949 by James Spann, moved from Church Street to the Yates Building in 1959, under the ownership of Gilbert Yarbrough, also offering printing services. Yarbrough retired in the 1960's and sold the building to Charles Lankford and James Crawford.
