Inscription. In 1873, the hotel, Hornbeak House, burned on this corner. Afterwards, this lot held a small frame building housing a barber shop, Dodd's Beauty Shop, a shoe shop and a harness shop. J.A. Bates Law Office was behind that building, facing Huddleston Street. Ed Russell bought the lot in 1932 and built this brick building, with Western Auto locating here in 1940. Smith's Shop for Men opened here in the 1950s. Joe Harper bought the building in 1957 and opened Otasco Home and Auto. Rene's Beauty Shop occupied part of the building. Harper Furniture, Griggs & Stewart Appliances, Yesterday on the Square and Beeyoutiful were later occupants. City Barber Shop and the Hickman County Chronicle occupied the basement with entrances on the north side. The building was remodeled as an art studio in 2022 and office space added on the second floor.
