In the early 70s, Ettore Scola (born in Trevico, Avellino in 1931) shoots in Rome C'eravamo tanto amati, an Italian comedy which traces Italy's history from the Resistance to the "years of lead". The film, written by Scola together with Age and Scarpelli, represents Italian society through the lives of three characters: Gianni (Vittorio Gassman) an ambitious lawyer, Antonio (Nino Manfredi), a humble young man who works as a stretcher-bearer in hospital, and Nicola (Stefano Satta Flores), an aspiring film critic. Three young men whose friendship dates back to the war and who decide to part ways. The common object of their desire, and cause for argument, is the beautiful Luciana (Stefania Sandrelli). Scola decides to set his film in different locations around Rome, from piazza del Popolo to piazza di Spagna, from the Trevi Fountain to the Aventino to San Camillo Hospital; certain locations were also chosen as a tribute to some masterpieces of the Italian cinema. In the square of the Trevi Fountain, for instance, the director shoots a scene which explicitly evokes La dolce vita, by Fellini, who, by the way, also appears in the film as himself. Besides Fellini, Scola also involves other famous exponents of the Italian film industry, such as Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio De Sica or Aldo Fabrizi, who plays the part of a roman building speculator. The film also includes an appearance by TV presenter Mike Bongiorno as himself, while hosting the famous quiz show Lascia o Raddoppia. We all loved each other so much comes out in cinema in 1974, with a touching dedication to De Sica, who died shortly after the end of shooting.
