1771 Present
Since its formation in 1767, Pittsylvania County and its largest city, Danville, have responded to the call for our countrys defense by bountifully supplying soldiers for every conflict in our nations history. They have been a bulwark for democracy around the world from the American Revolutionary War to Operation Iraqi Freedom in such places as Valley Forge, Gettysburg, San Juan Hill, Meuse-Argonne, Iwo Jima, Chosin Reservoir, Khe Sanh, Kuwait, Kabul, and Baghdad. Collectively, they have earned every award given by our country from the Medal of Honor for gallantry to the Good Conduct Medal for faithful service. This abundant outpouring of patriotic devotion by the citizens of this area is exemplary and is deserving of our respect and appreciation. The Danville/Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial stands as a monument to those for whom we hold the highest praise. May it be a testimony of our gratitude to the servicemen and women who have defended our nation in all our past wars and who, today, continue to protect our way of life around the world.
