United States Casualties: Dead 58,205; Wounded 153,363
In the early 1960s, several thousand U.S. military advisors were sent to the Republic of South Vietnam to help stem the spread of Communism from North Vietnam. Alleged attacks on two U.S. warships in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 7, 1964, led Congress to authorize military action and persuaded President Lyndon Johnson to order bombings along the North Vietnam coast. The intensity of the Vietcong Tet Offensive in January 1968 brought a buildup of U.S. ground troops that eventually reached 543,000 men. Unrest at home over the United States involvement in the conflict soon made the war a political issue. Heavy bombing of North Vietnam brought about the signing of a peace treaty in Paris on January 27, 1973. All U.S. troop were pulled out of the country in March of that year, and many captured U.S. personnel were released.
