In 1895, Cuba, seeking independence, rose up against Spain. The United States sympathized with the forces of liberty and freedom in Cuba. With tensions rising, President William McKinley sent the Battleship, Maine, to Havana harbor where it mysteriously exploded on February 15, 1898, killing 262 American sailors. War was declared with Spain on April 21, with the battle-cry, Remember the Maine. After Theodore Roosevelts cavalry unit, the Rough Riders, defeated Spanish Troops at San Juan Hill, fighting came to an end in Cuba on July 17. A month later, in the Spanish-owned Philippines, Commodore George Dewey raised the American flag over Manila. A peace treaty was signed at Paris in December, 1898, recognizing the independence of Cuba and giving the United States possession of the former Spanish colonies of Puerto Rico and the Philippines. The war lasted 113 days.
