United States Casualties: Dead 407,316; Wounded 670,846
War raged in Europe and the Far East for more than two years with Germany, Italy, and Japan seeking to expand their territorial holdings before the United States entered the conflict following Japans attack at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The United States and its allies invaded North Africa in 1942 and Italy in 1943 before attacking Adolph Hitlers Fortress Europe on June 6, 1944, with D-Day landings on the coast of France. Meanwhile, the island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific Theater with fierce fighting at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and successful aerial bombing carried the war to Japans homeland. Germany surrendered May 8, 1945. Japan followed suit four months later after the United States detonated the first atomic bombs on two Japanese cities. On September 2, 1945, Japan formally surrendered aboard the battleship, U.S.S. Missouri, in Tokyo Harbor.
