Operation Enduring Freedom
Operation Iraqi Freedom
Retaliation for the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, began with air strikes by a five-nation coalition on terrorists training camps and their leadership headed by Osama Bin Laden, harbored in Afghanistan. Beginning October 7, 2001, aerial attacks signaled the start of Operation Enduring Freedom which proposed ridding that country of its repressive Taliban government and its sanctioned terrorist ally, Al Qaeda. Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 20, 2003, to disarm Iraqs government and to free the Iraqi people from Saddam Husseins oppressive leadership. Air Strikes rendered the countrys military network ineffective. Pin-point bombing of selected targets led the way for ground troops to enter Iraq, fight their way to Baghdad, and topple the Hussein government.
Erected 2005 by City of Danville and Pittsylvania County.
