United States Casualties: Dead 116,708; Wounded 204,002
Often called The Great War, this conflict between the Allied Powers of Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia and the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire began in 1914 with the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. For almost three years, President Woodrow Wilson pursued a policy of neutrality for the United States. Germanys declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare in January 1917 threatened the lives of Americans and caused America to join the Allied cause. General John J. Blackjack Pershing led the American Expeditionary Force with the inspiring declaration, Lafayette, we are here. Airplanes, tanks, machine guns, and poison gas saw their first widespread use. Americas strength helped defeat Germany. On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed.
