Daniel Claes was born on December 14, 1905 in Resekne, Latvia. His parents were Sofie née Sneider and Rubin Claes (both born 1879 in Latvia). He had three brothers: Harald (born 1902), Alexander (born 1904) and Jacob (born 1908). The family came to Norway in 1913.(Submitted on January 24, 2025.)
In 1937 he married Bertha Kassan (born 1911 in Denmark). In February 1938 they had their son Jan. Daniel was a waiter by profession, but in 1942 he worked as a handyman.
In March 1941 Daniel was arrested for carrying out illegal work. He was first held at Møllergata 19, before being moved to Grini. He was released in July. In the autumn of the following year he was arrested again. He was deported with the D/S Donau on November 26, 1942 together with his wife and son, his parents and a brother.
Upon arrival at Auschwitz, Daniel's parents, his wife Bertha and four-year-old Jan, were sent straight to the gas chamber. Daniel was put to work. According to testimony from Josef Berg, in February 1943 he was severely emaciated and was no longer considered fit for work. (Bjarte Bruland: Eyewitnesses p. 37). Daniel's date of death is given as February 24, 1943.
