Jan Claes was born on February 2, 1938 in Oslo. His parents were Bertha née Kassan (b. 1911 in Denmark) and Daniel Claes (b. 1905 in Latvia).

Jan was arrested on November 26, 1942 together with his mother. They were deported on the prison ship D/S Donau the same day. His father Daniel was also on this transport, as were large parts of both Bertha's and Daniel's families. Upon arrival at Auschwitz on December 1, 1942, Jan was sent straight to the gas chamber together with his mother. He was four years old when he was killed.

None of his deported relatives survived.
