De 1975 à 1990, le centre de Saint-Denis est l'objet de l'une des plus importantes rénovations urbaines d'Europe, étendue sur 13 hectares. Vétustes, insalubres dans leur quasi-totalité, les immeubles s'écroulaient; abandonné de ses commergants, ce quartier se dépeuplait. Dès 1950, plusieurs projets sont avancés pour le rénover. Le programme finalement adopté respecte le tracé des rues anciennes et répartit harmonieusement commerces, logement social, ou équipements publics en centre-ville, au pied de la basilique. Un gigantesque chantier est entrepris, dont chaque tranche est confiée à un architecte différent; une coordination veille à la cohérénce de l'ensemble. Dans le même temps, un vaste programme de fouilles archéologiques permet de restituer la mémoire de la ville.

From 1975 to 1990, the centre of Saint-Denis was the subject of one of the most important urban renovations in Europe, spread over 13 hectares. Dilapidated, almost entirely unsanitary, the buildings were collapsing; abandoned by its traders, this district was depopulated. From 1950, several projects were put forward to renovate it.
