Trenches in town? This is a surprising sight, but yes, that is what we can photograph taken in August 1915 in Saint Christophe in outer Soissons, a town that had been trapped in the midst of trench warfare for almost a year. The German troops held high ground and shelled the town constantly, causing terrible damage. in summer 1915, photographer Pierre Machand produced the report "Situation in Soissons and its Outskirts” for which he explored the town and showed through his lens the devastation amidst which fortified positions were held, like this defence trench that zigzagged between graves. There is no trace here of finishings or wooden constructions: the walls and floor were smooth, but there is nothing to suggest that the trench was designed for long term use in this “garden of the dead” as Roland Dorgelès described it, the war broke out and brought a new type of trench, conceived to defend a besieged town where even the most sacred space is used.
