Ravin des Vignes Ravin : Mouvement de terrain permettant de se rendre d'un point à un autre, en toutes circonstances, sans se perdre et le plus souvent hors des vues terrestres. De ce fait, cordon ombilical des unités en ligne de feu dans la guerre meurtrière de positions. Lieu où séjournaient les troupes de réserves leu période intense de combat.

De part et d'autre de la ligne de feu, dans l'Enfer terrestre de la bataille de Verdun, les ravins souvent bombardés offrent un paysage de la Mort ... Chargés tels des animaux de bât, haletant et sans souffle, ces hommes de relèves montantes, ses territoriaux de corvées diverses entament la première étape de leur calvaire en direction de la zone des combats, souvent harcelés par des tirs d'artillerie ennemis dont quelques obus à gaz rendent l'atmosphère irrespirable. Que se passait-il dans leur cœur stressé par la peur, la fatigue, la chaleur ou le froid selon les saisons, la soif, l'odeur des cadavres en putréfaction. L'appel des blessés récents,

craignant d'être abandonnés à leur triste sort. La souffrance physique se complète d'une épreuve morale lancinante. C'est dans ce désert d'orage d'acier, de folie nocturne, que s'effectuaient de nuit ou par temps très couvert, les déplacements dans tous les ravins des Hauts de Meuse, notamment dans ce ravin des Vignes, entré dans l'Histoire l'été 1916. "Œuvre des métallurgistes des usines qui fabriquent les matériels et des ingénieurs qui composent au fond de leur laboratoire, les gaz asphyxiants et autres produits meurtriers (lance-flamme). Schluckt: Geländeform, die es erlaubt, sich von einem Geländepunkt zu einem anderen zu begeben unter allen Umständen und ohne verloren zu gehen, und dies meistens ohne vom Boden aus gesehen zu werden. Dadurch ist es die Nabelschnur der Einheiten entlang der Feuerlinie in diesem todbringenden Positionskrieg. Ort an dem sich die Reservetruppen während dem Zeitabschnitt intensiver Kampfe aufhielten.

In dieser "Hölle auf Erden" der Schlacht um Verdun bieten beiderseits der Feuerlinie die oft beschossenen Schluchten eine Landschaft des Todes dar... Wie Packtiere beladen, keuchend und atemlos, beginnen diese Männer der dienstantretenden

Ablösung, diese Angehörigen des Landsturm Heer mit ihren unterschiedlichen Frontdiensten, mit der ersten Station ihres Leidensweges in Richtung Kampfzone, oft von feindlichem Artilleriebeschuss geplagt, von dem einige Gasbomben die luft unerträglich machen. Was mag in den Herzen vorgehen, die gestresst sind von der Angst, sowie - je nach Jahreszeit - von der Hitze oder der Kalte, dem Durst, dem Gestank der verwesenden Kadaver. Das Rufen der kürzlich Verwundeten, welche befürchten ihrem Schicksal überlassen zu werden. Zum physischen Schmerz kommt noch eine quälende moralische Prüfung hinzu. Und es ist dieser Wüste der stählernen Gewitter, des nächtlichen Wahns, dass die Bewegungen bei Nacht oder stark bedecktem Himmel in sämtlichen Schluchten der Hauts de Meuse stattfanden, und im Besonderen in dieser "Ravin des Vignes", die im Sommer 1916 in die Geschichte einging, als " Die Arbeit der Metallarbeiter, welche in den Fabriken das Kriegsmaterial herstellen, die Ingenieure, welche im hinteren Winkel ihrer Labore die Giftgase und andere tödliche oder mörderische Produkte zusammensetzen (Flammenwerfer - Flüssigkeit) - versuchen durch ihr Werk der Materie, nicht ohne Erfolg, den Mut der Kämpfer zu zersetzen". This marker is in a village that was abandoned after the war. In the background, shell craters can still be seen.

On each side of the fire line in this "Hell on Earth" of the battle of Verdun, the often-shelled ravines present a death scene...
