Fiorello LaGuardia
The son of immigrants, Fiorello La Guardia was the first Italian-American to serve in congress. He devoted his life to the public interest. He was a champion of social justice and a defender of the poor and the oppressed. He fought against discrimination and corruption.
As mayor of New York, he was a leader in building the modern metropolis. He gave the people of this city twelve years of humane and progressive government. He was honest. He cared. He was beloved. He set the standard for all others to follow.
