Inscription. In 1886 William Douglas Thompson and Dee Cooper bought the general merchandise store that was operated by Clagett Brothers in this building, changing the name to Thompson and Cooper. In 1900, Thompson bought a brick building on the north side of the square and moved the business there, renaming it W.D. Thompson and Sons. Coble and Peeler Drugs moved into this building, followed by the Walt Thompson Grocery Store, which operated through the 1960's. First Federal Bank took over the building in the 1970's, leaving for a new location on Highway 100 around 1990. The Hickman Shopper located here in the mid 1990's, along with Cumberland Survey, and the Hickman County Historical Society made its home here until 2008. The building was sold and renovated in 2018.
