From the initial meeting, the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial was born., Since the formation of the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation, thousands of volunteer hours have been dedicated to bringing the original idea of a permanent memorial to completion., Funding for construction of the memorial has been provided through fire department, public, private and corporate sponsorships, monetary donations and service contributions., The memorial features four firefighters that are depicted in a fire related structural collapse one firefighter is trapped under a beam as another firefighter comforts him and calls for help a third firefighter is attempting to lift the beam off the trapped fire fighter the fourth firefighter in fighting back the flames as the rescue attempt of the fallen firefighter continues. The pictorial plaques located on the inside of each entrance to the memorial site depicts the various disciplines of fire and rescue services that can be found in North Carolina., The memorial was constructed to pay lasting tribute to the fallen firefighters of North Carolina.
