Between April and August 1916 the 15th Battalion, as part of the 1st Canadian Division, served eight tours in this general area. During that period they also took part in the Battle for Mont Sorrel in June 1916.
An important task here at Hill 60 was to assist the Canadian Tunnellers in the preparation of the two great mines detonated on 7 June 1917.
Lt Col Marshall was killed in action close to this memorial on 19 May 1916.
