Over the following days, while the French booby-trapped the fort to destroy it If forced to evacuate, a 420 mm shell set fire to hundreds of kilograms of blast explosives placed under the 75 mm turret. Its top was blown off and the turret half destroyed. The damage was irreparable.
The regular entrance to the fort was so heavily shelled that the French no longer used It. Soldiers therefore went in and out via access points that were still practicable.
As soon as he took control, General Pétain decided that Verdun should be firmly defended via the right bank of the Meuse. He ordered the forts to be reinforced with personnel and equipment. The Instruction was to resist.
The meaning of the 'defense of Fort Vaux' was about to assume Its full significance.
