Alberto Santos-Dumont
Aeronaut, sportsman, self-taught, and inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont gained worldwide prominence, and his projection began with the first steerable balloons with a gasoline engine. This merit assured him of winning the Deutsch Prize in 1901, when he flew around the Eiffel Tower in his airship number 6, becoming one of the most famous people in the world during the 20th century.
On October 23rd, 1906, this genius performed the feat that earned him the title of Air Marshal and Patron of the Brazilian Aeronautics. The Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont flew for about sixty meters at the height of two or three meters in the first flight in a device heavier than air, controllable, and with its own propulsion. The unprecedented feat, taking off unassisted by an external launch system, was witnessed by an unexpected crowd. As the Official Commission of the Aeroclube de France was only partially present, a new test was scheduled for the November 12th.
Equipment capable of taking off the flight by its own means of propulsion and ensuring controlability was the great ambition of the aeronautics of the time. The Father of Aviation repeated the feat aboard the "14-bis", an airplane of his own, not only with a pioneering spirit but with the testimony of an audience of about 1000 people, including journalists and the Official Commission of the Aeroclube de France, at Bagatelle Gamefield, in Paris, France, on November 12th, 1906.
The first heavier-than-air flight, without taking advantage of headwinds, ramps, catapults, slopes, or other devices, was certified by the Aeroclube de France. Moreover, it was the first flight officially witnessed by an aeronautical registration body and the first of its kind recognized by the International Aeronautical Federation.
