William A. Whitaker, contractor
Built 1910
Brick contractor George W. Murray announced his plan to erect a four-story, frame and stucco apartment house in April 1910. Originally called the "Casa Murray," the Mission Revival style building was renamed Maydestone Apartments before its completion in November 1910. The thirty-two small apartments were equipped with pull-out beds that were retained when the building was restored in 2010-2011 after sitting vacant following a fire in October 2003. Also preserved were other features such as hardwood floors, built-in hutches, steam radiators, and the original Otis "birdcage" elevator.
Erected 2025 by City of Sacramento.

Excerpt: "It is also an excellent example of how a historic rehabilitation can be an energy efficient project, expected to receive its LEED Silver certification soon. Sustainable elements such as solar thermal and photoelectric panels, a rain harvesting and irrigation system for existing window boxes, and clear solar film on original window glass, are integrated into the historic rehab. The original cage elevator recovers electricity while it brakes for floors, the same way a Toyota Prius recovers its energy, making the restored elevator both historic and 98% efficient."(Submitted on February 11, 2025, by Sean P.
