1. Windley House Marker
Inscription. Craftsman style bungalow built for John Jerome Windley (1875-1957), native of Beaufort County, auditor for Standard Cement Construction Co.; and wife, Lucille Frederick (1881-1969), native of Duplin County. In 1968 purchased by Ashley Conner Mills (1920- ), native of Columbus County and proprietor of Mills Superette for fifty-one years; and wife, Evelyn Hardy (1921- ), native of Horry County, SC. Remained in family until 1998.

Regarding Windley House. John J. Windley also was secretary and treasurer of the C.W. Polvogt Co., a department store that operated on North Front Street. • Ashley Mills' middle name is spelled 'Connor'. Mills (who died in 2016) and his wife (d. 2011) opened their grocery store on South 17th Street in 1947 and worked side by side in operating it for 38 years. They were married for 72 years.
