Inscription.

Saint-Lazare, in a wealthy family from Revigny-sur-Ornain in the Meuse, to a mother who was an English teacher and a father who was a master clerk who would later have a great Parisian career.

A law graduate, he pursued brilliant studies which led him to a law degree. André Maginot, in 1897, performed his military service in the 94th Infantry Regiment in Bar-le-Duc. Returning to civilian life in 1898, he obtained a doctorate in law and became the youngest auditor at the Council of State. When war was declared in 1914, this proud Lorraine native, then aged 37, demonstrated strong authority in the field of military matters with serious experience in the general interests of the State. Faithful to his republican and patriotic ideal, at the mobilization of August 1, 1914, he was assigned, at his request, as a simple soldier or 44th Infantry Regiment to the entrenched camp of Verdun.
