Inscription.
Circa 1845, the Irish-born Matthew Crooks built this Greek Revival side-galleried cottage -one of the earliest extant buildings in the Garden District-as a home for his young bride. The merchant had arrived in New Orleans by way of New York. Seized by "Gold Fever," he permanently moved west in 1849 and amassed a fortune there as a real estate developer. His family subsequently joined him in San Francisco. In 1850 Crooks auctioned his New Orleans home. A watercolor, commissioned for the sale and preserved in the Orleans Parish Notarial Archives, pictured the semi-rural homestead with an attached five-stall stable extending in the rear. After the Tulane Educational Fund acquired the property in 1897, the barn was demolished and until 1918 the home was used as housing for faculty of the nearby H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College. French-born master potter Joseph Fortunι Meyer, a leading force with Newcomb Art Pottery, lived here between 1902 and 1912. The existing appearance resulted from a renovation In 1976 when its owners enclosed the front gallery and made an addition running parallel with Camp
